Are you wondering when and how to move your toddler from a cot to a 'big' bed? Our moms give their advice. It can be challenging convincing them to stay put in their bed, once they realise they can get out of it freely.
But with a little gentle persuasion and persistence, you can get bedtime back on track and they will hopefully be sleeping soundly in their new beds in no time. When is the right time to move from cot to bed? There is no 'right' time to make the transition, but most children make the move sometime between 18 months and three and a half years. A tell-tale sign that your child is ready is when they try to climb or jump out of their cot.
By moving them to a bed, you won't have to worry about your child hurting themselves trying to escape the cot. How to make the change Moving from cot to bed is a big milestone for you and your toddler, and it should be celebrated. You could make it a special occasion by throwing a 'big bed' party — inviting all the local teddy bears for a sleepover!
Making the changeover fun and exciting should help you reduce and soothe any anxieties your child might have about the move. Every child is different. Some children will adjust easily, while others will take longer. Second-born, or subsequent, children may find it easier to make the move as they want to be the same as their older sibling, sleeping in their own bed.
In some cases, you may not need to make a special effort at all. Some children just naturally feel like they are ready to make the move. No matter how prepared your child is to move to a bed, you should ensure that you put up a guard rail to prevent your child from rolling out. Can you help this mom?
